As founding partner and president of Leahy Management Group, Jim Leahy, CAE brings more than 20 years experience in both association management and organizing to our client efforts. With an extensive background in collaborating with nonprofit groups, Jim specializes in building strong organizations, as well as all aspects of adocacy efforts, including designing and implementing effective grassroots issue campaigns.
Jim is a Certified Association Executive, a designation from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). This is the highest level of professional achievement available from the Society. CAEs must demonstrate a high level of knowledge, ethical fitness, and leadership to earn and maintain the designation.
Prior to establishing Leahy Management Group, Jim was the managing partner at D&J Strategic Communications, LLC and Community Politics, LLC. He also was the co-director of the Government Relations and Association Management Department at Tobin, Carberry, O’Malley, Riley & Selinger, P.C., in Hartford, Connecticut. While there, Jim led the effort to secure $5 million in state funding for the renovation of the historic Westport Country Playhouse.
Jim served as the executive director of the Connecticut Public Interest Research Group known as ConnPIRG, for four years. During his tenure, the statewide environmental and consumer group enjoyed the most significant growth in its history. A key victory during his leadership was the passage of the first in the nation toy safety labeling law to protect children under the age of three from small toy parts. The legislation served as the basis for federal legislation, extending the protection to children across the country.
Early in his career, Jim worked for the Fund for Public Interest Research in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. where he supervised door-to-door fundraising and field operations in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
Jim is a graduate of Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. A native of Milford, Connecticut, he lives in Tolland, Connecticut with his wife Mary Jo and their children, Hannah and Tommy.
